he said "republicans are seriously considering a doomsday plan if fiscal cliff talks collapse entirely. it would be quite simple. house republicans would allow a vote on extending the bush middle class tax cuts. that bill already passed in august in the senate. and offer the president nothing more. no extension to the debt ceiling, nothing on unemployment, nothing on loopholes. congress would recess for the holidays and the president would face a big battle early in the year over the debt ceiling. two republican officials tell me this is becoming the most likely scenario. "the new york times" added more detail including this amazing quote from rep michael c. burgess of texas. "there's always better ground, but we have to get there." in this case the better ground is exchanging the threat of a congressionally induced recession for the threat of a congressionally induced global financial crisis combined with recession. that, that is your better ground? that's a big plan? it's not -- it's not better ground for the economy. and, frankly, i find it difficult to see how it's better political

all this talk about the fiscal cliff and all the tough words there's this code coming through in the language this evening, which could make quite a difference if it leads to a deal. it's really worth looking at very, very closely, and we will. we're also going to talk about the president's pot problem. he doesn't really have a pot problem, but he's got a pot problem. he's out west and it could make a big difference to him. and a lot of his constituents who helped push him back into office. it's really going to be a difficult issue for the white house to grapple with, i suspect. it's all coming up on "erin burnett outfront." >> the interesting thing about the pot problem, as you say, well, it's clearly been a big topic ever since the election. there is a real federal states rights issue going on there. >> yeah, there is. and the problem is if you pursue that path, well, there are a lot of other things that are federal states rights issues. so it's a very tricky thing to watch. you can't just look at one part of the issue and say it's just about that because then other people will com

paul steinhauser live in washington, thank you. >>> let's talk more about the fiscal cliff. we have the washington correspondent for the new yorker and cnn contributor ryan lizza with us. john boehner and the president in a room, just the two of them. good idea? >> i think it is a good idea. >> if you look at the accounts of the negotiations of 2011 when you had boehner, mcconnell, nancy pelosi all in one ba bainer and the president who were on the phone meeting privately. they could go fwook their constituents and boehner could go to eric cantor and see what kind of deal they could get. but that was the dynamic that came the closest. >> they didn't have control of their parties basically right? does john boehner have more control? >> they think obama can get anything through the house of representatives. but everything that has happened since the election all of the moves in the republican caucus have been about boehner consolidating control over that tea party caucus that didn't allow boehner to get a deal in 2011. >> there will be some criticism about it being two people
